What is Vertigo? Vertigo is a sensation of dizziness or a feeling that you or your surroundings are spinning or moving, even when you are standing still. It is not a disease but a symptom of an underlying condition affecting the inner ear or brain.

Common Symptoms of Vertigo

  • A spinning sensation (either you or the environment around you)

  • Loss of balance or unsteadiness

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Sweating

  • Abnormal eye movements (nystagmus)

  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)

  • Hearing loss (in some cases)

Causes of Vertigo Vertigo can result from several conditions, including:

  • Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV): A common inner ear disorder caused by displaced calcium crystals.

  • Meniere’s Disease: A disorder of the inner ear associated with hearing loss and ringing in the ears.

  • Vestibular Neuritis or Labyrinthitis: Inflammation of the inner ear due to infection.

  • Migraine-Associated Vertigo: Dizziness linked to migraines.

  • Head Injuries: Trauma affecting the inner ear or brain.

  • Stroke or Neurological Conditions: Less commonly, vertigo can be linked to serious brain conditions.
